1839 - started work on the Irish Ordnance Survey.

1842 - transferred to English Ordnance Survey.

1843 - dismissed for dissent over working conditions for Irish workers.

1848–1851 - studied mathematics and physics in Marburg and Berlin.

1851 - met Thomas Huxley.

1864 - with others, formed the X Club, a pressure group involved in improving scientific organisation.

1868 - publication of Faraday as a Discoverer.

1867 - succeeded Faraday as Superintendent of the Royal Institution.

1877 - perfected pasteurization
