Protona was founded by Reinhold Stach in Liechtenstein in 1952. The company are best known for taking on the production of the Minifon tape recorder, taking on the Minifon activities from the company's creation in 1952. These tape recorders were very popular and afforded the company success in the 1950s.

In 1962, the company ran into financial problems and Stach suddenly died. So, Protona was bought by Telefunken. But the financial problems continued and interest in the Minifon tape recorder was declining. In 1967, the company was dissolved.
