1842, founded by Joseph Shuttleworth and Nathaniel Clayton who set up an iron foundry and engineering business. Developed into manufacture of steam-powered farming machinery. Three factories including the Stamp End Works, Titanic Works, and the Abbey Works which produced the Handley Page and Vickers bombers for WWII. This latter works was used for the manufacture of railway rolling stock via Clayton Wagons Ltd. In 1920's Titanic Works was bought by Clayton Dewandre Ltd.
