Opened to the public on the 16 April 1853 with a line between Bori Bunder, Bombay and Thane but soon extended. After the devastation of the Second World War, the forty two Indian railway companies amalgamated into the Indian Railways. They were nationalised in 1951 and zones were put in place in 1952. Also known as India State Railways
