1901-1904 - worked as a photographer. Known as the 'Acrobatic Photographer': Vaniman produced images from hot air balloons, ships masts, and 30-metre wooden pole. Most famous images are of Australia, Hawaii and New Zealand. 1904 - explorer: attempted - by airship - to reach North Pole and cross the Atlantic 1910; 1912. Died on latter trip when 'Akron' exploded off the New Jersey coast.
