Took up photography in 1928; began photographing for the Resettlement Agency in Western Virgiania and Pennsylvania iin 1935, than for Farm Security Administration (FSA) until 1938; 'Walker Evans: American Photographs' exhibition held at Museum of Modern art in New York, first exhibition there devoted to work of a single photogrpaher; published 'Let Us Now Praise Famous Men' in 1941; staff writer for 'Time' magazine in 1945, shortly after became editor of 'Fortune' magazine, until 1965; professor of photography at faculty of Graphic Design, Yale University School of Art.
