Victoria Press was founded by Emily Faithfull at Great Coram Street, London, in May 1860; dedicated to the employment of women in the printing and publishing industry, with the backing of the Society for Promoting the Employment of Women; attracted the approval of Queen Victoria, and in 1861 was appointed by royal warrant ‘Printer and Publisher in Ordinary to Her Majesty’; 1862 the press moved to Farringdon Street, London, where the printing was carried out with steam presses, and in 1867 Faithfull handed the management of the press to William Wilfred Head, who bought her out in 1869 and continued to run the press as a vehicle for the employment of women until 1882.
