James Wilkinson Breeks 1830 - 1872
Victorian anthropologist, born Warcop, Westmoreland; entered Madras Civil Service 1849; private secretary to Governor of Madras 1861-1864; appointed Commissioner of the Nialagris 1867; 'An Account of the Primitive Tribes & Monuments of the Nilagiris' (1873) is one of the earliest uses of field photography to illustrate an ethnographic and anthropological work; died of fever contracted in researching book in 1872
