Robin Herd studied at Oxford, and graduated with a double first in Physics and Engineering. In 1961, he joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment, working on the Concorde project. In 1965, he was recruited by McLaren racing, and designed a number of their cars for various racing series, but notably the M7A which provided McLaren with their first Formula 1 Grand Prix win in 1968.
He left Mclaren to work for Cosworth and Williams, before co-founding March Engineering. March competed in a number of racing series, including IMSA, IndyCar, Formula One and Formula Two.
