Gordon Coppuck became an apprentice at the National Gas Turbine Establishment (NGTE) based at RAE Farnborough. In 1965, he left Farnborough and his work there on the Concorde project to join former colleague Robin Herd at McLaren. One of their designs, the M7A, gave McLaren their first win in Formula One. He remained at McLaren until 1980, when he joined Herd again at March Engineering.
