Bush Radio was founded from the remains of the 'Amplion' company in 1932 by Gilbert Darnley-Smith, and started trading as a subsidiary to the 'Gaumont British Picture Corporation'. The company was one of the most well-known names in early British radio and television.

In 1945 Bush passed into the hands of the Rank Organisation and became one of the major British radio manufacturers. But, independence ended when the company merged with Murphy Radio in 1962 becoming Rank-Bush Murphy (RBM). There was still some limited activity after this date, but the new company focused on the development of scientific instruments. During the 1980s, the brand name disappeared from British markets and was bought by Alba plc in 1986 to be used on Chinese manufactured goods. See 'Bush'.
