1824 - Chance Brothers founded; made crown glass, plate glass and optical glass, for lighthouses etc.; traded at the Glassworks, Spon Lane, Smethwick, Birmingham, England (1824-1963) and at Glasgow; 1889 - incorporated as Chance Brothers and Co. Limited; 1935 - Chance Brothers Limited; 1955 - taken over by the optical wing of Pilkingtons Glass as Chance-Pilkington, based at St. Asaph, N. Wales. Birmingham branch of the company continued to trade under the name Chance Brothers Limited until the plant was closed in 1963
