1719 - given an appointment for life as one of the tellers of the exchequer. 1720 - set out for Italy. 1722-1727 - was MP for Wallingford. 1739 - erected an astronomical observatory at his home. 1740 - began astronomical observations which continued until his death. 1752 - was a principal proponent (with Lord Chesterfield) for the adoption of the Gregorian calendar and the change in the new year from 26 March to 1 January.
