1729 - sent to London to study under portraitist, Thomas Wright. 1746 - donated two roundels to the recently established Foundling Hospital. 1750 - left for Italy where he gave up portraiture and concentrated on landscapes. 1757 - returned to London. 1768 - was one of the founder members of the Royal Academy of Art. 1776 - the Royal Academy appointed him its librarian.
