1833 - joined his father Sanderson Brothers & Co. 1842 - with his brother, Thomas, set up in steel smelting at Portobello works, Charlotte Street, Sheffield. After his father joined the company it became known as Thomas Firth & Sons. 1849 - a new 13 acre Norfolk works was begun in Savile Street, Sheffield. 1869 - founded the Iron and Steel Institute.
