Known for the arithmometer (calculator); Born in Colmar, Alsace, France; Grew up to become founder and director of two Paris insurance companies, the Phoenix and the Sun. Was also the inventor of the first commercially succesful calculating machine and founder of the calculating machine industry. His work was recognized in his own lifetime and he received many honours, including the Legion d'Honneur.
