Began work in 1872 as a Junior Clerk at Itchen Abbas for London & South Western Railway. Moved to other stations including Kingston upon Thames where he helped set up the 'South Western Gazette'. The profits of the Gazette were given to the LSWR Orphanage Fund. In 1883, he wrote and had published 'A Royal Road', a history of LSWR. In 1884 he became Chief Clerk to the Traffic Superintendent at Waterloo and Assistant Storekeeper at Nine Elms seven years later. 1892 he became Secretary and General Manager of the Midland & South Western Junction Railway, going on to become Superintendent in 1899. In 1902 he became General Manager of the Great Central Railway . In 1912 he was knighted for his development of Immingham Dock. He was involved with the War Office during 1917-1919 but returned to GCR as General Manager until Jan 1923 when it became part of the London & North Eastern Railway. For ten years after he held the role of Chairman of Beyer, Peacock & Co.
