Observed from the Cape of Good Hope (1833-38) with 20-foot telescope to extend his father's (William) catalogue of nebulae and double stars to the Southern Hemisphere. Later master of the Mint and scientific advisor on many matters. His most notable written work being, 'Outlines of Astronomy'.
