1790 - made a freeman of Newcastle. 1803 - awarded 20 guineas by the Society of Arts, for the design of a clock striking train which did not use a fly. 1806 - working in Newcastle, manufacturing mechanical logs and sounders of his own design. 1813 - following the death of his father, moved to Ironmonger Row, Cross Cheaping, Coventry. 1825 - had opened a manufactory at Clerkenwell. 1842 - following trials at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, Massey's chronometer no. 1 was purchased for the Royal Navy for 50 guineas.
