1840 - Thomas Turnball of Whitehall leased a small shipyard from the Turton family in Larpool Wood on the left bank of the river Esk and began making wooden sailing ships. 1843 - leased a yard at Boghall, Whitby from Thomas Fishburn on the opposite bank of the Esk for ship repair work. 1844 - building work ceased until the acquisition of the Whitehill Dockyard, Whitby. 1850 - building work recommenced with the acquisition of the Whitehill Dockyard, Whitby from bankrupt R. Campion. 1870 - switched from making wooden to iron ships. 1887 - made its first steel tramp steamer. 1899 - the Boghall yard disposed of. 1902 - yard closed.
