1851 - he became assistant physician to the recently founded St Mary's Hospital, Paddington,

1858 - invented the aesthesiometer, for measuring the tactile sensititvity of the skin.

1873 - was made physician-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria

1886 - knighted by Queen Victoria
