born in Bell's Close, on the banks of the Tyne; 1835 - apprenticed to Mr. Carr, medical practitioner in Newcastle upon Tyne; 1838 - attached; as a student to the Newcastle Infirmary, and to the Newcastle School of Medicine and Surgery; 1842 - diploma of M.R.C.S.Eng., and commenced practice; 1851 - graduated M.D. at St. Andrews University; 1845/6-1848/9 - Lecturer in Anatomical Demonstrations and Dissections in the Newcastle School of Medicine; 1849? - on the formation of the new College of Medicine, became lecturer on midwifery and diseases of children; 1856 - elected physician to the Newcastle Dispensary; 1873 - elected consulting physician; 1859 - degree of M.D. from University of Durham in recognition of his

services to the College of Medicine.
