In 1868, John Murray (1843-1873), introduced a wire frame mask with a flannel covering stitched in place to administer chloroform to patients. Murray, like many of those specialising in anaesthesia, developed his own designs and practices. He died before the age of 30 and the following year a bust was presented to Middlesex Hospital where he worked.
