British Rail Engineering Ltd. was the engineering division of British Rail. Although it had only been incorporated as a limited company on 31st October 1969, by 1988 it had been separated in two: British Rail Maintenance Limited (BRML) - whose ownership was retained by British Rail - and British Rail Engineering Limited - in preparation for privatisation. The following year it was purchased by the Swiss-Swedish conglomerate ABB.
