Book, paper witb buckram-covered card covers, South Wales - The Country of Castles, fourth edition, issued by the Great Western Railway, printed by Kelly & Kelly, London, August 1924. 102pp + adevrtisements, fold-out map. The cover is embossed with the title and the GWR crest in gold, and also 'British India Line S.S. Mandala.' The SS Mandala was built in 1915 and scrapped in 1934 - this book appears to have come from its library.

It is assumed that this volume comes from the main Barnsley Station which was co-owned by the L&YR and passed to the LMS and then British Railways. Entries give staff names and addresses, birth dates, dates of service entry, job, pay and next of kin. The entries have been updated to show transfers, resignations and retirements.

Tickets, card tickets in buckram-covered guard books, photograph album and box, GER, GNR and LNER Specimen Ticket Collection, 1900s to 1930s. The collection comprises specimen Edmondson-type tickets of every class and type from the GNR and the LNER. Tickets are numbered 0000 and many are stamped 'Specimen.' Many of the tickets are grouped by the LNER operating sections, and there are unusual and rare items such as perambulator tickets, tickets for agricultural shows, exhibition tickets etc. etc. The GER tickets include WC, sailor on duty and music hall artist tickets. Housed in 9 guard books and 1 modern photo album, plus 2 small boxes of loose tickets. Several thousand tickets in total. Collection originated at the Railway Printing Office, Stratford, East London, which was established by the GER and continued by the LNER. The specimens were saved by the last Master Printer, a Mr. Townley, on the closure of the office in the 1950s. He passed the collection to his son, who bequeathed it to The National Archives.

Book, paper with buckram-covered card covers and polythene dust sleeve, War Diary of the English Electric Company Ltd. March 1938-August 1945, published by English Electric and printed by L.T.A. Robinson Ltd., 1946? Gives a month-by-month account of work done at English Electric's Rugby, Stafford, Preston and Bradford sites, along with sections on research, work done by D. Napier & Sons Ltd., and a roll of honour. 255pp. The diary was given to Arthur Hough when he returned to the Bradford works after military service. It is inscribed on the inside cover in pencil "Presented to Arthur Hough on 22nd June 1946 by Mr. L.J. Sargeant EE Co Bradford Works Manager after returning from military service 1939 to 1945."

Papers, paper, card, leather, buckram, Royal Train Papers of R.D. Howard, 1890s to 1910s. Notebooks, memoranda, letters etc. written by R.D. Howard during his work on the Royal train of the South Eastern & Chatham Railway. Also includes printed timetables, schedules, cuttings, and small rolled diagrams, and a selection of bottle neck labels. The majority of the papers relate to European journeys, and they include items in German and French. Currently in 4 archive boxes.

Consists of a large bound volume of drawings made by Alexander while training at the Royal Indian Engineering College (including railway survey exercises, bridge and cutting designs, canal locks, turbines, architectural exercises etc.), 24 photographs of Indian railways after the earthquake of 12 June 1897, file of career papers including correspondence, leave record note re pension grade on retirement.

Manuscript, paper volume with buckram-covered card covers, 'Unbeaten Tracks', by H.B., assumed to be H. Bird, writing to his brother (brother-in-law?) Charles Chambers. The manuscript consists of copies of letters from H.B. to Chambers between April 1860 and November 1870. The inside cover bears the signature of Edith M. Bird. The letters describe railway journeys, works and travels through France, Italy, Hungary, Poland etc. Towns from where HB writes and frequently describes include Paris, Leghorn, Naples, Foggia, Borynicze (Poland), Bukowina, Transylvania, Budapest, Moldavia, Vienna and London.

Notebook, paper with buckram-covered card covers, Notebook of R.M. Fishenden, 10 June 1938 to 2 Sep. 1947. Gives timing details of various journeys long with details of the locomotive and narrative of any unusual events. Journeys include the Golden Arrow, the Lakes Express, the Coronation Scot, the Bournemouth Limited, Bournemouth Belle, various suburban journeys in London and Cambridgeshire, and trips on the SNCF and Belgian Railways. Includes comments critical of the war timetables introduced in 1939, but there are no journeys recorded between 1942 and 1947(possibly because Mr. Fishenden was evacuated?).

Volume, paper with card covers covered in buckram, Notes et Renseignements sur le material des Chemins de fer francais, manuscript volume dated as 1864 in pencil on the title page, author as yet unknown. Contains diagrams and notes on French locomotives from the 1840s to 1863, and smaller sections on tenders, wagons and rails. Mostly in French. The diagrams bear figure numbers as if intended for publication. Various sheets of notes inserted, including 'Special condiions for the locomotive in France', descriptions of the drawings, notes on the meaning of LSWR discs and headlights, and sketches of various rails and fittings. Includes diagrams of early locomotives by English manufacturers including Stephenson, Crampton and Sharp Roberts. Some diagrams hand-drawn, some taken from printed sources.

This example was published by Cheffins. Cover bears the London & Birmingham Railway crest in gilt. Back of the map features distance and fare information. In 2 sheets. This map was issued before the railway was formally opened on 9 April 1838, and before the line was actually complete. The section between Denbigh Hall and Rugby had to be carried out by stage coach until later in 1838, which is noted in the text on the back of the map.
