Depicts a cavalry soldier in the uniform of a hussar regiment leaning from a railway carriage window taking leave of a well-dressed woman on the platform during the Crimean War. The woman, on the verge of tears, is clasping his hand in hers. Behind her a bearded guard holding a green flag raises his left hand to signal that the train is ready to depart. Just visible behind the guard, seated in the carriage, is another hussar reading a newspaper. At bottom left is a pile of luggage. Signed in red at bottom right "Robert Collinson, 1862 (?) & 187(?) " The dates are obscured by the frame. The frame is arched at the top. On the reverse is a label reading "Exhibition Folkestone, 1967, Exhibit No 28 from Museum of British Transport, London, Museum No 1052/52". Written in ink on the stretcher are "£200" and "1052/56 or 75/22/6".
