The albums feature members of the Russian Royal Family, taken mainly in St Petersburg and the Crimea and in various locations around Europe. The albums were compiled by Herbert Galloway Stewart, who was employed by the Grand Duchess Xenia (1875-1960) as a tutor for her son, Prince Andrew Alexandrovitch Romanoff (1897-1981). The albums form a part of the Ricketts Collection, a collection of prints, albums, ephemera and objects assembled by Howard and Jane Ricketts. The Collection concentrates mainly on 19th century British photography, but is also rich in documentary, topographic and ethnographic photography from around the world.

An album of hand-coloured photographs, produced in Japan in about 1895. The album depicts Japanese people, customs and scenery. The cover is lacquered and decorated in red and black with a stylised cherry blossom tree. Inlaid with panels featuring a fan, a screen and a view of Mount Fuji, the overall design reinforces traditional Western images of Japan. This album is possibly by Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1934) who worked in Yokahama from 1885 to 1912. Previously, he had worked closely with the Austrian photographer Baron Raimund von Stillfried (1839-1911), buying his studio and stock of photographs in 1885. This also included negatives by Felice Beato (1825-1903). Kimbei's albums often included the work of these photographers alongside his own.
