This Linde ammonia refrigeration compressor was made between 1895 and 1905 by the Birmingham-based Linde British Refrigeration Company, before being bought second-hand in 1922 and installed at the Union Cold Storage site in the Liverpool docks. This medium sized, 155mm Bore x 260mm Stroke, double acting compressor is attached to a Siemens electric motor drive. The complete machinery takes up around 3 metres by 6 metres, with the fly wheel being approximately 2.5 meters in diameter upright.

1895-1905

This mark 4N16 ammonia refrigeration compressor was made in 1960 by L Sterne and Company Limited, an engineering company based in Glasgow. The refrigeration machine was installed at the Fylde Ice and Cold Storage company in Lancashire. This medium sized four-cylinder ammonia compressor is approximately a metre wide, four metre long and three meters tall. The majority of the machinery is painted white with parts painted green. Each of the cylinders is marked with the words “L Sterne & Co Ltd, The Brown Ironworks, Glasgow, Scotland”.
