Pair of hexapod legs used with the Variax machine tool made by Giddings & Lewis of Wisconsin in 1993. The Variax is designed to allow movement of the machine tool through six axes, thus allowing great complexity of component manufacture. The Variax Machining Centre developed by Giddings & Lewis was intended for use in the aeronautics industry. It is an innovative machine tool that, using six variable-length legs to support the working tool, can move in six axes and thus produce work pieces of great complexity. Each leg consists of a gimbal at each end to allow it to pivot in any direction, and a ball screw attached to an electric motor to allow the leg to extend or contract.
