Sectional model of London & South Western Railway express locomotive on rails, 1890, scale 1:8 (with 1899-112). This model of an express passenger locomotive for the London and South Western Railway. The full-size locomotive, from which this model is copied, was designed by William Adams in 1890. It was built at the LSWR's Nine Elms works. This class of locomotive was still in use 50 years later, latterly on local trains. The model-making firm of T. H. and C. J. Coates built the model to a commission from the Science Museum. Together with a third brother, the model-makers worked on this model 14 hours a day for one year and nine months. As far as possible the details are exactly to scale, using the same kind of materials as on the original locomotive. Dimensions were obtained both from the LSWR's working drawings and from details on the actual locomotives. The model of the locomotive was completed in 1896 and the tender in 1899.
