    Rosary, carried by a sailor as an amulet against drowning

    1901-1930

    Buddhist rosary with 108 beads of bone and a semi-precious stone, Tibetan, 19th century. Used for divination; after reciting a mantra, one grasps the rosary with both hands and counts by threes the intervening beads between one hand and the other. The remainder will be one, two, or three.
