Horse-drawn sleigh, to be drawn by one horse, wooden and without cushions, assumed to be Scandinavian or Russian, 1830-1870

Decorated hand sleigh

Decorated hand sleigh

Dutch sleigh in the form of a push chair. As it is ornamental it would not have been for commercial use, but before the construction of decent roads in the Netherlands, particularly in trade centres like Amsterdam, the only way to travel in mud or snow was by sleigh. Large carriages and coaches made dangerous ruts in the mud and often got stuck. This resulted in the unique invention of the Sledgkoetsen in 1662. It consisted simply of a coach body on runs, pulled along by one horse with one driver walking along side.
