Signed bottom right. Exterior view of the buildings and tower at the chemical works, now part of the ICI Mond Division at Northwich. The ammonia-soda process of manufacturing the industrial alkali sodium carbonate (soda ash) was devised and put to commercial use by Ernest Solvay in 1865 and improved by Ludwig Mond in the 1870s. Brunner Mond and Company Ltd. established the first successful British ammonia-soda works at Winnington, Cheshire in 1873. A second Winnington plant came into production in 1926 at the Wallerscote works. Since 1928 the Brunner Mond Group has formed part of the ICI Alkali Division.
