Gelatin silver print entitled 'Charlotte de Rothschild Dwellings. Tenements built to rehouse emigre Jews from the Russian pogroms of the late 19th Century. Now decaying and inadequate (no bathrooms, etc) and inhabited (in many cases) by Pakistani families escaping poverty. The undercurrent communities inhabiting the worst parts of the World's cities. The peoples identity changes but their rationale and status never do'. Photograph by Nick Hedges.

Apart from the poor state of the property:- no bathroom, no hot water, outside lavatory, inside walls running with damp - these children were sleeping in the middle of winter, on two sodden seat cushions covered by a couple of old 'macs', there was no heating in the room, the snow lay outside and the windows were broken'.
