Anonymously compiled 18th century ms. volume of excerpts from alchemical works

[Principles of Mechanics, Hydrostatics, Optics etc.; illustrated with experiments. ca.1710. 98p. ms., in English but with Latin passages in the hydrostatics section. Comprises sections on mechanics, on hydrostatics, on thermometers, hygrometers and barometers, on catoptrics and dioptrics and on 'Sir Isaac Newton's colours'. Written at a fairly popular level, with many sketches and suggestions for simple experimental demonstration]

Essai sur les fers coules Pour le Roy; [bound with] Memoire sur la fonte et la Moulage des Bombes. 1767. [105 p. + 28 p.; 14pl. + 2pl. Two ms. works in French in which, though primarily military in purpose, the description of iron founding and casting is central to the text. Possibly produced for one of the French military schools specialising in artillery (Metz?). The first work is neither dated nor assigned to an author; the second bears 'a Metz le 21.bre 1767 Signe Dangenoust'. Both works have accompanying folding plates bearing ink and colour wash drawings]

Gabriel R.E., covering period late 1940s/early 1050s. Volume is both written and compiled; it totals c.135pp. but with many items additionally stuck in. Covers dock railways; berthing, loading and unloading, stowage etc of ships; tugs, cranes and other equipment; dock organisation. Mines de Fer nommes Normarken dans la Province Wermelandie en Svede. [Bound ms. volume (of 19 leaves) of watercolours and text re iron mining in Nordmark, Sweden to 1776. Contains: watercolour of mine shafting and tunnels; illustrated title page; a 1:800 scale ms. map view of the mine workings built up from 12 superimposed coloured map sections with cutouts, each section representing a different level of the workings and the whole producing a perspective effect; an ms. account (in French) of the geology and history of the mines up to 1776; index; 3 leaves of coloured vertical section drawings. End papers watermarked 1801. Text papers bear different watermark of uncertain date]

Bears note, signed by H.T. De La Beche 'transcribed from a copy, apparently contemporary with the original, once in possession of the Bishop of Bath and Wells']

With contents page. Affixed ms. note by G.S.L. Clowes dated 1930 Nov reads 'By Edward Battine, an officer of Portsmouth Dockyard. This copy dates from 1686 ... written soon after the appointment of the Special Admiralty Commission in the spring of that year, perhaps for presentation to one of the new Commissioners' etc.]

[Ms. notes on the 1805 ruling engine (dividing engine) of Sir John Barton / Robert Barton. 1876-1890. 35p. on 19 leaves. Robert Barton inherited his grandfather's 'Dividing Machine' in 1878. He worked out the method of ruling and was awarded a first prize for his rulings at Melbourne Exhibition. The notes include a description and experiments made over fifteen years, including work (1880) for Melbourne Exhibition]
