"Oslers Patent Letter Gauge" (c.1839). A balance working on a unique principle: an ivory rod is surmounted by an ivory tray for weighing the letter; the rod floats in a tube of mercury, while an iron ring around the rod indicates the weight on a gauge. Under base is a green paper label, printed A.F.OSLER - REGISTERED NO 125 - PERSUANT TO 2 & 3 VICTORIA CAP.17 DECEMBER 12 1839. With ormolu foot
