Running in board, Northern, ‘Workington North'. Workington North railway station was a temporary railway station in Cumbria, United Kingdom, constructed following floods which cut all road access to Workington town centre from north of the River Derwent. The station was located one mile north of Workington station on the Cumbrian Coast Line. Network Rail began construction of the new station during the night of 24/25 November 2009. The station opened on 30 November 2009, construction having taken six days. The temporary station was built in November when the railway provided a vital lifeline in the aftermath of flooding. The rail industry worked quickly to ensure that the Cumbrian Coast Line kept communities connected when the road network was disrupted, and it carried unprecedented numbers of passengers. When it first opened Workington North was used by over 2000 passengers every day but with the opening of the road bridge in April 2010 use of the temporary station all but ceased. It closed 08 October 2010.
