Watercolour, Making a cutting, by George Childs, 1841. Depicts the view looking down a cutting towards a wooden viaduct and an oncoming locomotive in the distance. At left are horses and spoil wagons, where navvies are extending the cutting with picks and shovels to accommodate a new line. The track appears to be broad gauge, and the scene is possibly the Great Western Railway between Bath and Bristol. Signed and dated by the artist at bottom right. Making a Cutting 1841
