Datsun Bluebird 180B SSS Coupe (hardtop) 610 series. The first cars imported to the UK from Japan were Daihatsus in 1964, but these were expensive and withdrawn. Success came in the 1970s with the Datsun Sunny, Cherry and Bluebird ranges. Toyota, one of Datsun’s major competitors in the market, outsold Datsun 2:1 in mainland Europe but this was reversed in the UK. Datsun were able to take the edge in the UK due to more aggressive marketing and sales, throwing in sunroofs and stereos for a sale. They were seen as the ‘affordable sporty’ car, a market more prone to ‘fashion’ and ‘performance’ considerations so have a quicker turn over. This is a Bluebird coupe and would have been at the higher end of the Datsun range. Registration number: YTD94L Bluebird motor car Road Transport 1973
