Although federal government physicians confirmed in 1974 that La Mar was suffering from black lung, his former employers have denied him any pension for his disability. At 68 his sole income - paid by the union - is 513 dollars a month. United Mine Workers of America "District 22" pays for his oxygen and continues to fight his case in the courts."
