Slag which has spontaneously disintegrated

before 1889

Short piece of rail showing rolling contact fatigue. Reference H/188. Acquired by The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) after the Hatfield crash (2000-10-17). This rail section was kept by the HSE for test purposes. (ORR report July 2006, 3.12) The rail is MHT 113A FB manufactured at Workington (Corus) in 1995.
