This file contains handwritten and typed letters, cards and other personal correspondence sent to or from John Alan Broughall throughout his life. The material includes early family correspondence from his childhood and education; letters exchanged with his parents during his early career; and personal letters and postcards from family members, friends and associates.
The correspondence also documents aspects of Broughall’s public, intellectual and community life. Significant items include a letter written in his capacity as Chairman of the Derby Anglo‑Polish Society concerning the position of Polish refugees in England (1946); correspondence with G. W. B. Mitchell enclosing an extract from a 1952 speech by Pablo Picasso; a copy of a letter Broughall sent to The Times on the education system (1965, with replies); and letters relating to his proposal for a statistical research unit concerned with environment in relation to cancer (1966–1967). The file spans the period 1907–1967 and provides insight into Broughall’s personal relationships, social concerns and wider intellectual interests.
