Medicine chest by Burroughs Wellcome, style 221, supplied to Lord Curzon, c.1920 ( Wellcome ref R.218)
The leather medicine chest was owned by George Nathaniel Curzon (1859-1925), a successful politician and traveller who was also awarded the titles Viceroy of India and Marquess Curzon of Kedleston. It contains a range of drugs, including quinine, aspirin, opium painkillers and laxatives.
The medicine chest was made by Burroughs, Wellcome & Co, who supplied a wide range of medicine chests and first aid kits often to influential people and explorers in a shrewd attempt to promote the product. It is pictured here with another Burroughs, Wellcome & Co chest (1981-1010).

Clear glass, test tube shaped vial, with paper label and cork stopper, containing Voice Tablets of Chlorate of Potash, Borax and Cocain. The cork stopper is covered by a chamois leather cap. This vial appears to be complete. The tablets consist of active ingredients chlorate of potash, borax and cocaine. Indicated on the label 'They allay irritation and quickly restore clearness to the Voice'. The bottle probably dates from between 1895-1908.

Glass bottle with cork stopper, covered in chamois leather and with paper label around bottle. To contain Tabloid brand of 'Grey powder' (containing mercury and chalk) with opium tablets. Grey powder was commonly used to treat syphalis, though it unknown if this was the use of the combined grey powder and opium.
