Painting, oil on canvas, Sinking of the LMS steamer SS Scotia off Dunkirk, by Norman Wilkinson, about 1945. Depicts the London, Midland & Scottish Railway's Irish Mail steamer SS Scotia sunk by German bombers during the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force and French troops from Dunkirk on 1st June 1940. The Scotia is on fire and listing badly to port. The destroyer HMS Esk is alongside, rescuing survivors, while heavily laden lifeboats pull away from the ship. The sky is filled with columns of dark smoke, and there are Stuka dive bombers overhead. In the background is the mole, with a lighthouse, and ships evacuating troops with fires in the town. Signed by the artist at bottom right. Created for The LMS at War series. Unframed.
