The illustration shows King John, bearded and wearing chain mail armour, a crown and blue cloak, riding a chestnut horse. Behind him is a knight, and a flag with the English coat of arms of three lions on a red ground. At right is the royal baggage train, with wagons, horses and men floundering in the water.
