B.S.A. twin-cylinder motor cycle and sidecar, 1922
This motorcycle and sidecar combination is representative of the very large number in use throughout the 1920s. Such vehicles were essentially for the working man and his family. They were used extensively during an era where the cost of purchasing and running even a small private motor car was prohibitive to the vast majority of working people. They were designed and built to provide reliability and comfort rather than high speed and rapid acceleration, and the majority were serviced and maintained, often to a high standard, by their enthusiastic owners.
When heavily laden with the family and luggage, these touring machines cruised at about 45 m.p.h.
