Leyland National single deck bus, 1973. Chassis no.0601, engine no.7257626, registration no. BCD 820L, Southdown Motor Services No.20
The Leyland national was the most important UK bus design of the 1970s and 80s. It was a joint venture between British Leyland and the National Bus Company to produce a standardised single deck bus for general use across the UK. Significant because it was built using the mass production techniques then used in the car industry, as opposed to the more traditional labour-intensive methods of the bus-building industry. This example was in service for Southdown Motor Services and travelled 540,000 miles in its service.
