Painting, oils on photographic print, Flying Dutchman broad gauge locomotive in Sonning Cutting, by F Moore (Thomas Rudd) about 1904. Depicts a Great Western Railway broad gauge passenger express heading for London Paddington station in 1892. The train has just passed beneath a brick viaduct in Sonning cutting near Reading. The locomotive is a Rover class 4-2-2, and there are five carriages. White smoke trails from the locomotive's chimney. Signed by the artist at bottom right. Created by painting in oils over a photographic print. The painting is based on a photograph of one of the last broad gauge expresses hauled by the locomotive Bulkeley on 16th May 1892, Locomotive Publishing Company negative number 50413. Published as a postcard by the Locomotive Publishing Company in 1904, as Locomotive Magazine series number 16. Framed and glazed. The frame is not original. Modern, wooden frame.
