Gustavus Green was the most successful British aero engine designer in the years before the First World War. In 1909 a 60 hp Green achieved the first circular one mile flight in a British aeroplane made by the Short brothers and flown by JTC Moore-Brabazon (later Lord Brabazon). During the First World War, Green engines were overtaken in performance by other makes, but found a marine use in coastal patrol boats. A development of the engine awarded the £1000 prize in the Alexander Motor Prize competition in 1911. The engine has separate steel machined cylinders within a water jacket of thin copper.
