GNR Doncaster Carriage and Wagon Works, 1916

A large red photograph album in poor condition. The album exhibits significant signs of age and wear, including a badly deteriorated spine faded covers, and areas of fraying. The spine bears the handwritten reference “Misc/03” in white ink. The inside of the front cover bears a printed stamp reading “British Transport Commission Historical Relics, Railway Museum York”, accompanied by the identification number 2495/60. The inside cover also contains a handwritten annotation in blue/black ink, which reads: “Edwin W Thompson. Carriages illegible Doncaster”. The album contains black-and-white photographs documenting the Doncaster Carriage and Wagon Works of the Great Northern Railway Company during the First World War. The photographs capture a wide range of subjects, including workshop interiors, railway infrastructure, machinery, vehicles under construction, and areas such as the timber yard. They also document the various departments within the works, with staff photographed both in posed group portraits and while carrying out their daily work. As the album progresses, an increasing number of women appear in the photographs, reflecting the changing workforce as many male employees left to serve in the armed forces during the war. Several photographs are accompanied by handwritten annotations in black ink identifying the subject or location depicted. Additionally, the inside of the back cover bears a small sticker which reads: “Prepared by Bagshaw and Son, Photographic Stores. St. Sepulchre Gate, Doncaster”.
